Internal Medicine Residency Program
Resident education and training at the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center embody an experience of true responsibility in comprehensive patient care. They incorporate traditional medicine with new practice trends. Our training includes exposure to patients with diverse medical backgrounds and pathology. We stress that the treatment of disease includes not only dealing with pathology but also supporting the patient's well-being as a whole. This perspective enables us to formulate a rational, scientific, and personal approach to the care of each patient.
Residents are prepared for the changing environment of healthcare and the challenges of providing the highest quality of care in a cost-effective manner.
The key decisions and the development of the policies for new academic and clinical tracks are identified and suggested by the Internal Medicine residents. The program's strength is derived from the camaraderie that exists amongst residents and faculty, proving that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Program Details
ARMC has two fully accredited house staff residency programs (39 resident/intern positions) affiliated with Thomas Jefferson University, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and Medical College of Pennsylvania/Hahnemann. Due to the limitations we placed on the number of house staff and students rotating at ARMC, the residents and students in training at ARMC have more opportunity for "hands-on learning" than with larger programs. ARMC has house staff in Internal Medicine (34), and Psychiatry (8). All ARMC's residency programs are fully accredited. In addition to the services most hospitals provide, our 581 bed Medical Center and Ambulatory Clinics offer many opportunities to the physician in training. These include:
- Level 2 Trauma Center
- Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
- Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
- OB/GYN High Risk Center
- Outpatient Clinics
- Geriatric Program
- Behavioral Health Division
- Emergency Room Rotation - second busiest in the state
- Cardiac Catheterization - largest number of MI admissions in the state

Meet the Program Director
Zia Salam, M.D., F.A.C.E.
Welcome to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency Program,
the only teaching facility in Southeastern New Jersey . This fully accredited
three year residency program has trained physicians since 1898 and we are pleased
to continue this tradition today. Our multicultural house staff is comprised
of 34 physicians that staff two divisions of the Medical Center and serve the
surrounding communities as well as the more than 37 million visitors to the
region each year. This diverse population of patients allows the medical resident
to gain proficiency in the evaluation and treatment of a broad range of medical
problems. The full-time and volunteer teaching faculty is comprised of both
university and community hospital trained generalists and subspecialists who
offer a practical approach to patient care. The Internal Medicine residents
are integrally involved in the care of the medical patients and also participate
in the medical management of the surgical, obstetric, and psychiatric patients.
They receive an extensive outpatient experience in both the medical clinic and
private physicians' offices. The Critical Care Units offer the resident a chance
to work with physicians and support staff dedicated to the care of the most
critically ill patients. We are proud of our 3 year rolling average 100% pass
rate on the ABIM Certifying Examination over the past three years. Residents
graduating from the three year categorical program are well prepared for either
private practice or an academic teaching position. Our residents are accepted
for training in subspecialty fellowships at university programs. It is my pleasure
to welcome you to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center . As you peruse the following
pages, you will be convinced that we have created a comfortable yet stimulating
atmosphere in which to train. The surrounding area offers many recreational
activities to pursue in your free time. We are fortunate to be able to provide
the incoming resident the best of both worlds.
