Who qualifies for weight-loss surgery?

While each candidate is considered individually, the following are general guidelines:

  • A Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or greater for at least five years; or
  • A BMI of 35 to 39, with significant medical complications related to obesity (such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, diabetes, osteoarthritis, gastroesophageal reflux/heart burn);
  • Inability to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight for a sustained period of time, even through medically supervised dieting.
