Often, dieting and exercise alone cannot successfully treat morbid obesity. Therefore, an increasing number of people are choosing an alternative approach – morbid obesity surgery. AtlantiCare’s Center for Surgical Weight Loss & Wellness uses two surgical methods considered effective by the National Institutes of Health:
What Are the Qualifications for Morbid Obesity Surgery (Surgical Weight Loss)?
While each candidate for morbid obesity surgery is considered individually, the following are general guidelines:
- A Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or greater for at least five years; or
- A BMI of 35 to 39, with significant medical complications related to obesity (such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, diabetes, osteoarthritis, gastroesophageal reflux/heart burn);
Inability to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight for a sustained period of time, even through medically supervised dieting.
