Understanding Childhood Obesity
Did you know that 17 percent of American children are overweight or obese? That’s almost one out of every five children. Childhood obesity is twice as common as it was just 20 years ago.
Chubby, plump, big-boned – whatever one chooses to call it, overweight and obesity place our children at risk for health and social difficulties that can trouble them for life. Health risks include heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and many other life-threatening conditions. Self-esteem can also suffer when children are overweight or obese, and may even lead to eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. And sadly, people who are overweight or obese as kids are more likely to be overweight or obese as adults.
That’s why it’s so important for children to have a positive relationship with food, a healthy self-image, and an active lifestyle.
