On June 1st, Washington Avenue School had their first “Operation- Make a Salad Day” in cooperation with the school nurse and in conjunction with the Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program. Every student and staff member enjoyed their own greens and fruit salad. The AtlantiCare’s edible garden grant helped us to plant and then harvest, lettuce, spinach, kale and radishes to feed nearly 500 people- students and staff. We harvested nearly 130 heads of lettuce, kale, and spinach for Operation Salad Day. The students were given a fresh fruit salad too, thanks to the Fresh Fruits and Vegetable program. The environmental club members as well as teachers harvested the greens, radishes and some herbs and prepared them for the salad. It was great with the edible garden grant that we have switched from mainly having an annual flower garden to harvesting an edible garden.
