Our Commitment

This page helps you understand how our critical care units work so we can better meet the needs of you and your family. We understand how difficult it can be to have a loved one hospitalized due to illness or trauma. Our goal is to make your time here as comfortable as possible.

The Critical Care Units are highly specialized areas equipped for the care of acutely ill patients. Our staff members utilize the most advanced equipment and technology to provide a personalized diagnostic and therapeutic plan of care for each patient. We are specially trained in the areas of trauma and critical care. Our goal is to combine professional excellence and personal empathy to serve our patients and their families with competence and compassion.

Your team of healthcare professionals including physicians, residents, registered nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, dieticians, case managers, social workers, clergy, radiology technicians and patient care technicians will be caring for you and your family member. As critical care specialists, we are committed to providing each patient with the highest quality healthcare, delivered in a courteous and caring manner.

Please ask any team member for assistance should you have any questions or concerns.

Upon Arrival

When you or a family member first arrive at the hospital, please visit the front desk to receive a visitor's pass. The ICU is located on the third floor of the hospital. Before you can enter the Medical ICU or Trauma ICU, you will need to call the unit by using the phone outside the ICU; the phone numbers to call are listed above the phone. The ICU nurse will advise if it is an appropriate time for you to visit your loved one, or they may ask you to wait in the waiting area. The reason for the wait may be because a procedure or treatment is in progress. Although the waiting time can be difficult, please be assured a nurse will come and escort you back or update you on your loved one's condition. The first time you visit your family member, an ICU nurse will be with you to explain the equipment and tubes that you may see.

Patient Information and Updates

To assure patient confidentiality, we ask that your family identify one spokesperson to receive and communicate information. This person will be the contact person in the event of an emergency and will be a resource to other family and friends. The spokesperson will be the only person the nurse will give information to over the telephone. If your family would like to meet with the physician, please inform the nurse and a family meeting will be arranged.

When a Loved One Needs Critical Care

DO designate one member of the family as the primary point of contact for the nurse.

DO ask the nurse what you should expect the first time you visit your loved one.

DO keep a notebook handy. During stressful times, a notebook is a useful tool to remember questions you want to ask and information you need to share with family members.

DO get to know the team taking care of your loved one. If a staff member does not have an ID Badge visible, ask for their name and what their role is in caring for your loved one.

DO use available support services. This can be an overwhelming and stressful time and you may feel confused, helpless, afraid and angry. We offer staff, pastoral care, social workers, and case managers to meet the needs of your family and loved ones.

DO ask to speak with the charge nurse, nurse manager, or nurse supervisor if you have a concern with any member of the healthcare team.

DO talk with your family member's nurse if you feel your visitation is too restricted.

DO read the Patient and Family Rights and Responsibilities document located in the patient's room.

DO keep the patient's safety and wellness in mind when visiting. Ask the nurse to advise you of any standard safety precautions and refrain from visiting if you are ill.

DO take care of yourself during the patient's recovery process. Fuel your body through proper diet, get an adequate amount of sleep, and take some time away from the hospital. This will enable you to provide the best healing support for your loved one.
