AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center offers a Lactation Consultant, a valuable member of our care team whose sole focus is breastfeeding success. If you choose to breastfeed your baby, she will be there to answer your questions and teach you and your baby how to make breastfeeding a positive and successful experience.

Breastfeeding Tips

  • Baby should breastfeed 12 times in a 24 hour period
  • Do not use a pacifier
  • By the time the baby is 6 days old he/she should have 2-3 loose yellow stools and 5-6 wet diapers a day.
  • You should be eating well balanced meals and drink to thirst
  • Sleep when the baby is sleeping

Pumping and Storage of Breast Milk

  • You should pump every 3-4 hours for at least 10-15 minutes
  • Milk can be stored at room temperature (less than 72 degrees for 10 hours) or, (greater than 72 degrees for 4-6 hours)
  • Milk can be stored in the refrigerator 32-39 degrees for 8 days
  • Milk can be frozen in a refrigerator unit for 3-4 months or in a deep freezer 6 months or longer

Breast Pump Purchase/Rental

The Nurture III electric breast pump is available for purchase at the cost of $90.

The Ameda electric breast pump is available for rent at the cost of $45 per month.
