ATLS® Course For Doctors
The ATLS® Course teaches well-established treatment methods and approaches trauma care in a systematized manner, presenting to the doctor a concise method of establishing assessment and management priorities in the care of the trauma patient.
The Need
Injury is precipitous and indiscriminate
 
The doctor who first attends
to the injured patient has the greatest opportunity to impact outcome
 
The price of injury is excessive in dollars, as well as human suffering
 
The Program
Developed by the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeon
 
One safe, reliable method for assessing and initially managing the trauma patient
 
Revised every four years in an effort to keep current

An organized approach for evaluation and management of seriously injured patients
 
A foundation of common knowledge for all members of the Trauma Team
 
Applicable in both large urban centers and small rural emergency departments

Course Objectives
The ATLS® Course provides the participant with basic knowledge necessary to:
Assess the patient’s condition rapidly and accurately 
 
Resuscitate and stabilize the patient according to priority
 
Determine if the patient’s needs exceed a facility’s capabilities
 
Arrange appropriately for the patient’s definitive care
 
Ensure that optimum care is provided
 
Student and Instructor Courses
Medical core content is taught interactively in the Student Course. Student Course participants, identified as having instructor potential, may advance to the Instructor Course, which focuses on how to teach the ATLS® Student Course
CME Credit
As an organization accredited for continuing medical education by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, the ACS designates that this CME offering meets the criteria for hour-for-hour credit in Category1
