Infant Swimming Self-Rescue

OPEN ENROLLMENT

Lessons available: 6:30-9:00 a.m. and 12:45-2:45 p.m.

The Harrah’s Regional Trauma Center at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center (ARMC) is partnering with Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) to offer a drowning prevention program to our community. The aquatic self-rescue™ instruction is for children six months to six years of age and is offered at the AtlantiCare LifeCenter.

INTRODUCING ANNMARIE KERSTETTER

AtlantiCare would like to introduce the newest member of the AtlantiCare-ISR team: Annmarie Kerstetter, a graduate of The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, and a lifelong resident of Ventnor. Annmarie is an ISR Certified Instructor which includes certification in CPR and First Aid.

Ann

TECHNIQUE

ISR uses both verbal and non-verbal cues to teach children as young as 6 months. Even though your child might not communicate verbally yet, he or she can learn to self-rescue. Remember, your child may not talk, but he or she has learned to crawl, walk and run. That is the only skill they need to find themselves in water danger.

Unlike other swimming lessons your child’s self-rescue lessons:

  • Are customized and taught one-on-one by a certified ISR instructor
  • Last for 10 minutes, Monday through Friday for 4 to 6 weeks
  • Emphasize health, ongoing program evaluations and parent education
  • Provide your child with the competence and confidence to safely enjoy the water
  • Extensive parent education on safety in and around the water

PROGRAM

AtlantiCare is the first healthcare organization to offer Infant Swimming Resource self-rescue™ classes

The Rollback-to-Float Program teaches babies 6 to 12 months:

  • To hold their breath underwater
  • To roll onto their back
  • To float unassisted, rest and breathe until help arrives
  • To perform these self-rescue skills first in a swim diaper, then while fully clothed

The Swim-Float-Swim Program teaches children 1 to 6 years:

  • To hold their breath underwater
  • Swim with their head down
  • Roll onto their back to float, rest, and breathe
  • Roll back over to resume swimming until they reach the side of the pool, crawl out or be rescued by an adult
  • To perform these self-rescue skills first in a swim diaper, then while fully clothed

SAFETY

ISR's safety record and proven instruction techniques are uniquely tailored to your child's needs based on comprehensive assessment and continual monitoring of your child's health and skill attainment, by certified ISR instructors.

For your child's well-being and comfort, prior to each lesson you receive BUDS (bowel, urine, diet, sleep) forms. This sheet tracks the unique physiology of your child, including bowel movements, frequency of urination, diet and meal-times, and the duration of every sleep episode in a 24-hour period.

Before each lesson, your ISR instructor will review the BUDS sheet and ask you further questions if necessary, and then individualize the lesson for your child. If your instructor feels any of these key measurements are not as they should be, your child's lesson will not take place. The BUDS sheet ensures your child learns in a healthy and safe environment.

LESSON FEES & COSTS

Lessons are held five days a week, Monday through Friday, averaging 4-6 weeks to complete either the Rollback-to-Float or Swim-Float-Swim program.

ISR National Registration Fee (new students) $105.00

Weekly Tuition Fee $100.00*

Refresher/Maintenance Lessons

In subsequent seasons, it is recommended that students enroll in refresher lessons. Refresher instruction will sharpen and refine skills for each child, reacclimate him or her to skills learned when their body was smaller and in a different stage of development. Between the ages of four and seven, students often move on to comparable aquatic programs which teach side breathing and the traditional swimming strokes.
