When do you take a patient to a trauma center?

3:30 pm: You arrive at the scene of a motor vehicle crash. There are three victims that you and your crew must treat. How do you manage this scene? How do you decide on where to transport the patients?

Can you identify which patients need the specialized services of a trauma center? Should they be transported by air or ground ambulance? Trauma Triage & Transport, a program developed through a grant from the New Jersey Department of Health, provides information and guidelines to answer these questions.

The program gives you clear, pertinent information allowing you to make the most appropriate decisions for the trauma victims you treat.

This program teaches the approved statewide trauma triage protocols!

Continuing Education Credits

The Trauma Triage & Transport curriculum has been approved for three (3) continuing education credits in the elective category, by the New Jersey Department of Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services.

TriageObjectives

The course uses lectures, audiovisuals and interactive scenarios to answer these questions:

• What is trauma and what are the needs of the trauma victim?
• What is a trauma system and how can it reduce trauma deaths by as much as 20 to 40%?
• How do you triage trauma patients? How are the New Jersey trauma triage protocols used to determine which patients should be transported directly to a trauma center?
• How do you make transportation decisions that are in your patient’s best interest? When do you use helicopter EMS transport?
• How do you access the helicopter EMS system and what information should be provided upon request?

Emergency scenes with critically injured patients, especially multi-casualty incidents, challenge the EMT to make quick life and death decisions. Trauma Triage & Transport will provide the tools you need to make those decisions accurately.
