Early Detection
Diagnosing heart disease early in its development can give you a better shot at successful treatment and recovery. Not only can early detection give you a leg up on lifestyle changes that can shape the course of your disease, you also have more treatment options to choose from in the beginning stages. The Heart Institute at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center offers the latest technology in diagnosing and evaluating heart disease at every stage.

HeartScan
The Heart Institute was the first to bring HeartScan technology to southeastern New Jersey. HeartScan uses electron beam computed tomography (EBCT) to evaluate the extent of plaque development in the coronary arteries in just half a dozen heartbeats. With EBCT, a rotating electron beam captures cross-sectional pictures of your heart. The scan takes about 20 seconds and provides extremely high-resolution 3-D images of the heart to doctors in minutes, improving not only the speed of diagnosis, but also the accuracy. No injections or contrast dyes are needed and you don't even have to remove your shirt. HeartScan identifies hard plaque deposits in your arteries and scores your risk of developing heart disease. After the exam, a nurse practitioner reviews your results with you and your family.

Echocardiography
Echocardiography uses sound waves to create a moving picture of blood flow in your heart. The Heart Institute offers transthoracic ( TTE ); transesophageal ( TEE ) and stress. The TEE is most commonly used because it provides the clearest view of the heart.
During TEE, cardiologists lower a small probe into your esophagus, which lies right behind your heart. The probe, equipped with a special imaging tool, gives cardiologists a clear picture of the entire heart, from front to back.

Stress tests
Stress echocardiograms allow your doctor to see what changes occur in your heart when you walk on a treadmill or exercise on a stationary bike. This gives information about how your heart performs when it has to work harder. The Heart Institute offers a full array of stress testing services at both our Atlantic City and Mainland campuses, as well as at our Cardiac Diagnostic office at the AtlantiCare Health Park in Egg Harbor Township.
