At war with cancer, at peace with the earth – a green building approach

AtlantiCare has designed and constructed its new Cancer Care Institute according to U.S. Green Building Council LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards, achieving LEED Gold certification. The building uses 22 percent less water and is 18 percent more energy efficient than a comparable facility.

AtlantiCare purchased renewable energy certificates to offset 70 percent of the building’s energy consumption for the first two years of occupancy.

Other building features include:

  • Solar orientation allows the long side of building to face south to shade from sun, while the short side doesn’t admit harsh morning or late afternoon sun
  • Reflective Sure-White EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer) roofing to reduce energy consumption
  • Natural lighting includes automatic light-monitoring system to reduce electricity usage
  • High performance cooling system operates as needed
  • Reactionary pumping system reacts to water needs, using only the required horsepower
  • Air flow reacts to the needs of the building
  • Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS) – provides multi-layered exterior walls to minimize heat loss through the building and reduce both heating and cooling costs
  • Designated parking spaces for hybrid vehicles
  • Facility features a natural theme, incorporating a healing arts program
  • Nature has been brought inside: trees are planted in several areas inside the facility
  • Three-quarters of the interior space provides natural daylight.
  • Thirty percent of the façade is glass to allow exposure to nature and daylight
  • Skylight and large windows provide exposure to nature, daylight and sunlight
  • Corridor of light extends through both floors, with skylights at each end
  • Thirty percent of materials used are recycled or from a sustainable source
  • Exterior landscaping features plants indigenous to our region
  • Green housekeeping program

Healing Arts

  art_quiet_contemplation

AtlantiCare’s Healing Arts Committee, a diverse, multidisciplinary group of community members, selected work from nearly 40 artists from New Jersey and Philadelphia for the facility as part of AtlantiCare’s commitment to dedicating one percent of new construction costs to the healing arts. More than 70 works, including paintings, tiles, sculptures, glasswork and other art reflect the building's themes of nature and healing.

AtlantiCare incorporates the healing arts into all new construction projects. Hundreds of beautiful works of art now hang in The Center for Childbirth and Emergency Department at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's Mainland Campus, the magnificent new George F. Lynn Harmony Pavillion at ARMC's Atlantic City Campus, and at the brand new AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute in Egg Harbor Township.

In addition to creating a relaxing visual and auditory experience for our patients and visitors, AtlantiCare's healing arts program gives local artists an opportunity to share their unique talents and cultures. Over 500 exquisite art pieces demonstrate that not only is southern New Jersey home to world-class healthcare, it is home to world-class artists as well.
