AtlantiCare nurse midwife becomes patient,

experiences special water birth

Jamie Sosa, CNM, AtlantiCare Physician Group OB/GYN has a new title – “Mom”.

She and her husband Willy became parents Friday, September 22.

Savannah Rose arrived by water birth at the Rodger B. Hansen Center for Childbirth at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Mainland Campus, Pomona, New Jersey.

“We didn’t plan it that way,” said Sosa. “I wanted to have a non-medicated delivery. I got into the tub to try to relieve my pain. My contractions were painful, but the warm water relaxed me so much that I was falling asleep in between them. I felt like I needed to push, so I asked my midwife if it would be okay.”

Her midwife was also her colleague, Jasmine Perez, CNM, AtlantiCare Physician Group OB/GYN.

“Jasmine said she was happy to do this for our baby and me. She delivered Savannah, with help from my nurse Stacie Herman.  My husband, sister, and mother were all with me. It was so beautiful. We were all crying,”

She said she looks forward to sharing her experience with patients when she returns to the APG office in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey.

“As a midwife, giving birth and learning so many nuances were humbling,” said Sosa.

“My care team spent time explaining how to nurse Savannah. Of course, I thought I knew all you need to know as a nurse myself.  There were so many little details the team helped me with.”

“I’m grateful that I was able to be in control of my delivery,” she said. “And I most appreciate that my care team was flexible in meeting my needs.”

ARMC’s Center for Childbirth offers water birth among its care options.  Expectant parents considering it should discuss it with their care team as part of their pregnancy care plan.
