Health Insurance Marketplace - AtlantiCare’s certified application counselors providing information, assistance throughout community

AtlantiCare is increasing awareness about and assisting people in enrolling in health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace created by the Affordable Care Act. This outreach includes education and assistance to those who qualify for free or subsidized health insurance through the Act. AtlantiCare’s certified application counselors have been explaining the public health exchange options and enrollment processes for the uninsured and underinsured.

AtlantiCare is sharing information via its website, social media, and other communication venues about the Marketplace and other financial assistance.

AtlantiCare is also helping community members who qualify for assistance under new modified adjusted gross income (MAGI)-based eligibility levels to enroll in Medicaid and in the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). AtlantiCare continues to help those who qualify apply for the New Jersey Hospital Care Payment Assistance Program, also known as Charity Care.

“We’re committed to increasing awareness about the importance of getting the right care at the right time, and eliminating barriers to getting that care,” said Steven Blumberg, senior vice president and executive director, AtlantiCare Health Solutions. “All too often, those without coverage put off getting care when they are sick or injured and eventually seek care in hospital emergency departments.  In addition to negatively impacting the health and wellness of the individual, this increases ER wait times and adds to the high costs of healthcare. The goal of expanding insurance coverage is to increase access to primary care and improve individuals’ health.  In the long-run, this will reduce healthcare costs.”
“AtlantiCare has been stressing the importance of relationships with primary care providers for many years because we see how this benefits our patients,” explained Blumberg. “We now have 83 physicians caring for patients in more than 30 AtlantiCare Primary Care Plus practices throughout Atlantic, Cape May and southern Ocean counties. We have also seen positive impact on community health and on financial savings through our Special Care Centers in Atlantic City and Galloway, and through Mission HealthCare and Community Health Services in Atlantic City. These primary care medical home models are helping those with chronic conditions, as well as those who are uninsured or underinsured access the care they need – decreasing the likelihood that they will need emergency care.”

Health Insurance Marketplace
As a Certified Application Counselor Organization, AtlantiCare is certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to assist people with the Health Insurance Marketplace application process. Certified application counselors assist the community in enrolling from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at AtlantiCare Community Health Services, based in the William L. Gormley AtlantiCare HealthPlex, 1401 Atlantic Avenue, Atlantic City.

AtlantiCare has held free town hall meetings to help people understand their options under the Act, and has given presentations at faith-based organizations, schools, nursing homes, justice facilities and other social service organizations to educate the community about the importance of having health insurance and how to enroll through the Health Insurance Marketplace.  

AtlantiCare created an awareness video - AtlantiCare Advances - Health Insurance Marketplace – which it posted YouTube and began airing on NBC 40 November 11.

Open enrollment through the Marketplace closes March 31, but the deadline for enrolling in coverage that begins January 1 is December 23.

“Many people who apply for Charity Care through AtlantiCare are not aware that they are eligible for Medicaid or low cost insurance now that New Jersey has expanded its Medicaid program eligibility for lower income individuals and families for coverage that begins January 1,” said Paul Mesgleski, manager, Financial Services, AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center. “We help people understand all their options.”
