Program Details

The post-graduate year one Pharmacy Residency Program at AtlantiCare is accredited by the American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists (ASHP). It consists of 12 months of general training and experience beginning on the last Monday in June. The residency goals, objectives, and evaluation processes are consistent with the accreditation standards developed by ASHP.

Purpose and Outcomes: 

The purpose of the Pharmacy Residency Program is to educate and train the clinical pharmacist for the provision of comprehensive pharmaceutical care.  Upon completion of this program, the resident will be prepared to enter a clinical practice position or to pursue second year post-graduate training in a specialty residency.   They will have demonstrated competency as evidenced by their ability to:

  • Manage and improve the medication-use-process.
  • Provide evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy management with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Exercise leadership and practice management skills.
  • Demonstrate project management skills.
  • Provide medication and practice-related education/training.
  • Utilize medical informatics.

Core Experiences (6 week rotations)

  • Orientation (5 weeks)
  • General Medicine
  • Anticoagulation/Cardiology
  • Critical Care (MICU, TICU, CVU)
  • Infectious Disease
  • Oncology
  • Emergency Department
  • Unit based clinical pharmacist (3 weeks)

Elective Experiences

  • NICU
  • Geriatrics
  • Ambulatory Care and Outpatient Services
  • Neurology
  • Nephrology/Hemodialysis
  • Pain Management/Palliative Care

Longitudinal Experiences

  • Pharmacy Informatics
  • Administration and Leadership
  • Project Management
  • Pharmacy Staffing – each resident serves as a central and decentralized pharmacist.  Experience as a staff pharmacist will enhance the development of practice skills, as well as instill confidence by assuming responsibility for safe and effective medication management.  This will be scheduled for every other weekend and as required by the needs of the department.
