What is Mission Healthcare?

  • Staffed with highly qualified, caring professionals
  • Quality care provided regardless of insurance coverage or ability to pay
  • AtlantiCare Mission Health Care is an FTCA Deemed facility.

mhc-prescriptionSeven percent of the residents in Atlantic County are homeless (no permanent address), and more than 60 percent of these people have no form of healthcare.

Homeless individuals on average have not seen a medical professional in 7-10 years, and more than 40 percent have 6-8 conditions needing medical attention. Based on these startling statistics, and in accordance with our vision to build healthy communities, AtlantiCare opened Mission HealthCare in 2003 to provide primary healthcare to the homeless population in Atlantic County.

We treat all patients, regardless of their insurance coverage or ability to pay. Now, in addition to primary care, the Mission HealthCare program offers

  • substance abuse management and detox;
  • mental health services;
  • care for diabetes, asthma and cardiovascular disease;
  • case management;
  • transportation to medical services;
  • referrals for specialty care; and
  • prescription assistance.

AtlantiCare’s Mission HealthCare program is primarily located in Atlantic City’s Rescue Mission, the largest homeless shelter in the southern New Jersey region. Our patients include residents of the Mission and also many other uninsured individuals who do not have permanent homes.

Not only does Mission HealthCare provide much needed medical care to an underserved population, it also helps ease the burden on local emergency departments, which is where many of these patients end up when their conditions are not managed. Mission HealthCare is pleased to reach out to the homeless community in many ways, including visits to Sister Jean’s Kitchen and local jails. We also host an annual barbecue and vigil for the homeless.

Consumer Advisory Board

Mission HealthCare is pleased to have an advisory board made up of current and past patients, community members, and representatives from local social service agencies. This group meets monthly to advise the Mission HealthCare staff about issues related to the homeless population, provide recommendations for program improvement, and to refer potential patients.

AtlantiCare Mission HealthCare is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). FQHCs include all organizations receiving grants under section 330 of the Public Health Service Act. FQHCs qualify for enhanced reimbursement from Medicare and Medicaid, as well as other benefits. FQHCs must serve an underserved area or population, offer a sliding fee scale, provide comprehensive services, have an ongoing quality assurance program, and have a governing board of directors.
