In addition to the outstanding outcomes achieved for heart patients at the Heart Institute at ARMC, AtlantiCare’s Neurosciences Institute provides stroke victims with potentially life-saving emergency care at ARMC’s state-designated primary stroke center at the Mainland Campus in Pomona and the region’s only state-designated comprehensive stroke center at the City Campus in Atlantic City. ARMC’s stroke centers have been certified with a Gold Seal of ApprovalTM by the Joint Commission for Advanced Primary Stroke Centers.

At the Neurosciences Institute, experts use the most advanced technology to diagnose and treat complex stroke and other neurological disorders of the brain. A rapid-response acute stroke team — available 24 hours a day, seven days a week — includes:

• Dual-trained endovascular neurosurgeons to assess and treat complex stroke
• Board-certified neurologists and emergency staff trained in diagnosis and treatment of acute stroke
• Board-certified neuro-radiologists and neuro-imaging services
• A neuro-interventional radiology team that uses biplane imaging for endovascular treatment of stroke
• Dedicated nursing and support staff trained in stroke
• Acute care rehabilitation services

CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE AND STROKE: THE VASCULAR CONNECTION

Coronary artery disease and stroke share the same risk factors — such as high levels of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, and obesity — that can lead to narrowed or clogged arteries anywhere in the body’s vascular system. Regardless of the location of the problem, the results can be devastating. A blockage in a coronary artery can cause a heart attack; a blocked artery leading to the brain can cause a stroke. In both cases, clearing the blockage as quickly as possible is critical for successful recovery.
