Students at Assumption Regional Catholic School, Galloway, and the AtlantiCare Heart Institute Heart Heroes joined forces to provide funds for an automated external defibrillator (AED) for the Galloway Senior Center.
Assumption's Student Council organized a dress-down day, during which pre-K through 8th grade students and staff donated money to don casual-wear for a cause. Participants were encouraged to wear red in honor of American Heart Month, recognized in February.
"It's important for our students to know where the money they raise goes," said Cathryn Flammer, advancement director, Assumption Regional Catholic School. "We want them to have fun fundraising, but also we want to help them become responsible citizens. Seeing the outcome and impact of their work and makes them feel connected to their community and encourages them to give back."
The AED was the second placed in the community through Assumption's fundraising efforts. The first, donated in 2012 to Bayview Volunteer Fire Department, was also through the AtlantiCare's Heart Heroes Matching Funds program.
About the AtlantiCare Heart Heroes
The ARMC Heart Heroes is a volunteer group that assists the Heart Institute at ARMC and AtlantiCare Foundation in raising funds to place AEDs in the community. The Heart Heroes fund a portion of the AED and community groups and/or organizations provide the remaining funds. AEDs can restore a normal heart rhythm in victims of sudden cardiac arrest. Audible and/or visual prompts guide the user through the process.
