Enrolling in Our Program

Steps for Program Enrollment

1. Pre-surgery Educational Seminar

Before you enroll in our surgical weight loss program, you and your support person (your spouse, a family member or a friend who you choose) must take part in a free, comprehensive Pre-surgery Educational Seminar. It provides you with the essential information needed to make an informed decision regarding surgery – and for many, it is the first step toward a healthier lifestyle.

You may view our webinar online. Or register to attend one of our free sessions held several times each month by calling 1-888-569-1000.

2. Online Test

After viewing the online webinar, we will ask you and your support person to take a short online test (20 true/false questions) and achieve a passing grade of 80 percent. If you attend a live seminar, you will take this test at your final preoperative appointment. Since weight loss surgery is a life-altering event, we want patients to fully understand the procedure and its implications.

3. Registration

After passing the written test, you may register for the program by completing an application in our Patient Portal or by calling the surgeon's office directly. This will provide AtlantiCare surgeons with general information regarding your medical, family and diet history.

To register online please click a surgeon’s name below. To register by phone, please call the surgeon's office using the numbers provided:

4. One-on-One Consultation with Surgeon

After you have either attended a live seminar or viewed the webinar and passed the online test, you can contact the individual surgeon’s offices to schedule an initial, one-on-one consultation. At that office visit, the surgeon will:

  • Get your complete medical history;
  • Conduct a physical exam; and
  • Give you an opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

5. Pre-operative Tests

Your surgeon will determine which preoperative tests and evaluations you need, depending on your age, gender, medical condition and the type of surgical weight loss procedure you are undergoing. These evaluations may involve a gastroenterologist, cardiologist, pulmonologist, gynecologist or other specialists.

In addition, you must be evaluated and cleared for surgery by your primary care physician and undergo an independent psychological evaluation to identify any issues that may impact the success of surgery.

For your convenience, AtlantiCare has "Block Testing" available for the pre-op tests that your surgeon has ordered. These tests can be performed at the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus during a single appointment, eliminating the need for you make multiple appoints for each different test. Please click here for additional information. Before you schedule "Block Testing"...we strongly recommend that you contact your insurance company to find out if you have coverage for these tests at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center and also to find out what co-pays or co-insurance you will be responsible for.

6. Meeting with Nutritionist

So that you fully understand the dietary and other lifestyle changes required following weight loss surgery, you will meet with a nutritionist to review dietary instructions. Also, you will attend at least one patient support group meeting prior to surgery.

Ultimately, the decision to have weight loss surgery is up to you. After hearing all the information, you must decide if he benefits outweigh the side effects and potential complications.
