AtlantiCare Celebrates National Breastfeeding Month

Tioseco Jennifer MD SM 2017“Breastfeeding has huge benefits for both moms and babies,” says Jennifer Tioseco, M.D., neonatologist and medical director for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at AtlantiCare’s Roger B. Hansen Center for Childbirth. “As a mother and a physician, I have witnessed and experienced both the physical and emotional benefits of breastfeeding.” Breastfeeding is a great way to bond with your newborn, and boosts your baby’s immune system. Babies who are breastfed have a reduced incidence of obesity and reduced incidence of infectious diseases.

Dr. Tioseco is a certified lactation consultant with the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice (ALPP). “Breastfeeding isn’t always straightforward, and new moms are tired! As a lactation consultant, I am better able to assist new moms in learning to breastfeed earlier to enhance their confidence in breastfeeding, and to offer support when they need it.”

AtlantiCare’s Center for Childbirth earned recognition as a Baby-Friendly Designated birth facility in 2016. The initiative encourages and recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. In addition to the support lactation consultants provide in-hospital, AtlantiCare offer monthly breastfeeding classes and breastfeeding consultation appointments with a lactation specialist.
