A former smoker for more than 50 years, Patricia was diagnosed with lung cancer in summer 2010. Initially, she was receiving care at a specialty center in Philadelphia, but she soon tired of the long drive and imposing on loved ones for rides to her medical appointments.
"The center was too far away, and I didn't like having to bother my family to take me there and back," she recalls. So one day, Patricia called AtlantiCare "on a whim" to ask about treatment options for lung cancer at the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute.
After that fateful phone call, Patricia scheduled an evaluation by AtlantiCare's radiation oncology specialists. They said Patricia was an excellent candidate for treatment with the CyberKnife® system, a highly accurate type of external radiation therapy. CyberKnife® provides a non-invasive alternative to surgery for people who are fighting cancer.
Patricia received three outpatient treatments over a week and a half. After a PET scan to check on the success of treatment, doctors cleared Patricia for travel to her winter home in Florida. Now, she's back in New Jersey, looking forward to another summer in Sea Isle City.
"I'm 100 percent satisfied with the care I received at the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute. My doctors did a great job of explaining what to expect before, during and after treatment with the CyberKnife. I didn't have any side effects, I didn't need anesthesia, and I didn't have to stay overnight in the hospital. Right after treatment, I was able to go home and do my normal activities. And I'm doing great today!" says Patricia.
