Nationally recognized breast surgeon to lead integrated program focused on coordinated cancer care for women in South Jersey

AtlantiCare, southern New Jersey’s largest and award-winning health system, has appointed nationally recognized breast surgical oncologist Dr. Kay Yoon-Flannery, as Chief of Women’s Oncology at the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute.

A fellowship-trained breast surgical oncologist known for her advanced techniques and patient-centered care, Dr. Yoon-Flannery will lead the strategic expansion of AtlantiCare’s comprehensive Women’s Oncology Program.  Under her leadership, breast, gynecologic and genetic cancer services will be aligned to create a more connected experience for women throughout their care journey.

“I’m honored to be joining the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute as Chief of Women’s Oncology,” said Dr. Yoon-Flannery.  “This is an opportunity to bring breast, gynecologic and genetic cancer services together under one program, making care easier to access and navigate.  My vision is for women to feel supported and connected through every stage of their journey, without having to piece it together on their own.”

Women’s cancer care has long been a part of AtlantiCare’s core clinical work, with established breast and gynecologic oncology programs serving patients across the region.  Breast Health is often the first point of contact for patients, and the program builds on that trust to connect them with broader services when needed.  It also strengthens efforts around access and equity, with the goal of making care easier to navigate, more responsive and grounded in the realities of women’s lives.

The program uses breast health as a trusted entry point and connects women to services at every stage, from prevention and early detection through treatment, genetic counseling, and survivorship. A multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, navigators, and support staff work together so patients experience continuity from screening through recovery and follow-up.

“Dr. Yoon-Flannery is a women’s healthcare visionary and a gifted surgeon who understands how to deliver care around the whole patient,” said Joseph V. Lombardi, MD, MBA, FACS, Chief Physician Executive at AtlantiCare.  “Her appointment as Chief of Women’s Oncology represents a turning point in how cancer care for women will be delivered across South Jersey.  Under her leadership, the Women’s Oncology Program will unite world-class surgical expertise with the compassion, access, and innovation women and families in our community deserve.”

In this new role, Dr. Yoon-Flannery will guide program growth while continuing her surgical practice.  This dual role reflects her deep commitment to staying closely connected to patients, even as she leads broader efforts to improve coordination across specialties, strengthen team alignment and expand access to care for women across South Jersey.

Dr. Yoon-Flannery has been at the forefront of advancing drain-free breast surgery and is recognized nationally for her expertise in advanced approaches, including nipple-sparing mastectomy, hidden-scar techniques, wireless localization, and oncoplastic surgery. Equally notable is her reputation for forming strong, lasting relationships with patients, providing care with empathy during some of life’s most difficult moments.

“When women come in for breast care, it’s often the first step in something much bigger,” Dr. Yoon-Flannery added.  “I want them to know they’re not alone in that.  My patients inspire me every day — they’re mothers, daughters, sisters, wives and they’re carrying so much on their shoulders while also facing cancer.  My role is to stand with them, whether that’s holding a hand before surgery or helping them move through each stage of care with the support they need.”

Through its affiliation with the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Institute, the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute offers patients access to leading research, clinical trials, multidisciplinary tumor boards and second opinions from internationally recognized cancer experts.
