Thomas V. Whalen, M.D.
Thomas V. Whalen, M.D., began his position as Chair of the Department of Surgery at Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network on September 1, 2006. He came to Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, NJ, where he was a tenured professor and served as Chief of the Pediatric Surgery Division and Program Director of the General Surgery Residency.

Dr. Whalen received his undergraduate and medical degree from Boston University, where he also completed his surgical internship. He completed his General Surgery Residency at the Navy Regional Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA, followed by a two-year Pediatric Surgery Fellowship (including Pediatric Renal Transplantation) at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles in Los Angeles, CA.

Dr. Whalen has a Masters in Medical Management through the American College of Physician Executives (Carnegie Mellon University program). He holds fellowships in both the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Whalen also serves as Regent for the American College of Surgeons and is a member of the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Surgery. He also represents the American College of Surgeons in the AMA’s House of Delegates.

Dr. Whalen and his wife, Elaine, have three adult sons, Daniel, Patrick, and Kevin.
