Breastfeeding offers many health benefits to your newborn baby. If you choose to breastfeed, we are here to provide the support and information you need.

AtlantiCare’s Lactation Consultant, Jodi Wetzel, RNC, IBCLC, is a valued member of our care team. Her sole focus is to make breastfeeding a positive, successful experience. She may be reached at 609-404-3837.

 

Breastfeeding Classes

Learn what to expect when you choose to breastfeed your baby. Class discussion includes:

  • Advantages and benefits of breastfeeding
  • Techniques for successful breastfeeding
  • Pumping and storing breast milk

Tips for Successful Breastfeeding

General

  • A baby should be breastfed 12 times in a 24-hour period.
  • Do not use a pacifier.
  • By the time the baby is six days old, he/she should have two to three loose, yellow stools and five to six wet diapers a day.
  • You should be eating well-balanced meals and drink to thirst.
  • You should sleep when the baby is sleeping.

 

Pumping and Storing Breast Milk

  • You should pump every three to four hours for at least 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Milk can be stored for the following periods:
    • Room temperature (less than 72 degrees) 10 hours
    • Greater than 72 degrees Four to six hours
    • Refrigerator temperature (32 to 39 degrees) Eight days
    • Freezer unit of a refrigerator Three to four months
    • Deep freezer Six months or longer

 

Breast Pump Purchase/Rental

The Purely Yours breast pump is available for purchase for $150.

The Ameda electric breast pump is available for rent at $45 per month.
