What Are the Qualifications for Weight Loss Surgery
While each candidate for morbid obesity surgery is considered individually, the following are general guidelines:
- A BMI equal to, or greater than 35, up to 39.9, with one significant medical complication related to obesity (such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, diabetes, osteoarthritis, gastroesophageal reflux/heart burn)
- A body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater with no significant medical complications
- Inability to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight for a sustained period of time
Those who are morbidly obese put themselves at greater risk for serious illnesses that jeopardize health. Qualified medical professionals can help guide and educate you towards weight loss options.
