Leading By Example

Less than one year ago I shared AtlantiCare’s statement on Diversity Equity and Inclusion. Since that time, I have been incredibly proud of the strides we have made to create an even more inclusive environment.
While our organization remains committed to fostering continuous learning and evolution, our firm stance against racism, hatred and violence in all forms remains unchanged.
We maintain hope that positive, lasting change is possible, yet recent events are sobering reminders that every day we must renew our commitment to becoming better together.
We honor the memories of those whose lives were sadly taken last week in Atlanta, and our thoughts are with the loved ones who are enduring these tragic losses.
As we embrace and celebrate the rich diversity of our AtlantiCare Family and the communities we serve, now is the time to stand with the Asian community to show our support.
Our words and actions must demonstrate kindness and appreciation; understanding and respect.
I again remind you that just as we lead by example in our health and safety practices, as healthcare leaders we must also lead by example in our interactions with others. We must:
• Understand that our experiences are not the same, but they all have merit
• Accept that regardless of our background, each of us have unconscious biases that must be challenged
• Take responsibility for living the change we wish to see
We have faced unprecedented challenges that have tested our resolve and resilience over the past year. And yet, I have seen amazing displays of generosity, compassion and community. This gives me hope that brighter days are ahead, as long we remember we are in this together.
By making a personal commitment to uncovering and eradicating biases—conscious or unconscious—we will continue to make a difference one person at a time, and build healthy, more inclusive communities.
Keep making a difference,
Lori
