Ask any parent, and they’ll tell you that welcoming a child into the world is among the greatest joys in life. The wonder and awe of counting 10 tiny fingers and 10 tiny toes will change you in ways you cannot possibly imagine.

But just as childbirth can represent the best of times, it can quickly turn tragic for those women who experience severe complications.

On January 23, New Jersey will recognize the second annual Maternal Health Awareness Day. It is an opportunity to support women and families and empower their voices throughout the childbirth process, while calling attention to maternal health issues that can have fatal consequences.

Every day, two women will die nationwide following childbirth; each week, 1,000 women are affected by severe complications during delivery. In a country with a population of nearly 330 million, this may not seem like much. However, in the past 30 years the U.S. pregnancy-related mortality rate has more than doubled.

Many of these deaths and near misses / severe complications are preventable.

At the Roger B. Hansen Center for Childbirth at AtlantiCare, we are ready to guide new families throughout their birth experience. From parent education programs to postpartum care, our expert team is ready to care for you from before your first contraction through your first trip home as an expanded family.

And that’s important; as parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles ourselves, we’ve been in your shoes and want you to take comfort in knowing you’re not alone.

Our team includes board-certified anesthesiologists, board-certified obstetricians, certified nurse-midwives, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia board-certified neonatologists, specialty certified nurses and certified lactation consultants. We also feature the region’s only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The combination of our resources and skilled team ensures you will receive comprehensive care before, during and after delivery.

Just as important, we want you to know that you are an incredibly important voice we also want to hear from.

Stop! Look! Listen! Is a maternal health and safety initiative designed to empower you as a woman or loved one to speak up and advocate for yourself during childbirth. After all, you know yourself and your body better than anyone.

The birth of a child is a momentous occasion. We also want it to be safe for all women. That’s why at AtlantiCare, every day is Mother’s Day.
