With You Every Step of the Way
At AtlantiCare, we use a staged, coordinated approach to radiation therapy. This allows your cancer care team to work efficiently with each other and with you during the process. You can rest assured these devoted specialists will guide you through every step. You can also find peace of mind knowing we are fully accredited by the American College of Radiology for radiation therapy for delivering the highest standards of patient safety and care.
The radiation therapy process has four parts:
A Thorough Evaluation
At your first visit, your radiation oncologist will review your imaging and medical records, evaluate your general condition, discuss the details of your radiation treatments and answer any questions you may have. He or she will also confer with your referring physician and other cancer specialists to help determine the best method of treatment. You may bring a loved one to your consultation.
Simulation
Your technician will take several CT images and, using a CT scanner with AdvantageSim MD virtual simulation software, will locate the area to be treated with razor-sharp accuracy. You will then be given small but permanent tattoos to pinpoint areas during treatment. These tattoos are not very noticeable and allow you to maintain daily hygiene throughout treatment. Photographs will then be taken of the area to be treated. Your physician, physicist and dosimetrists will review information from the scans and create your personalized treatment plan, which will be reviewed again and approved by your radiation oncologist prior to implementation.
Daily Treatments
Radiation treatment is a painless process that is typically done every day for five days for as long as you need it. You will lie on a table while a linear accelerator delivers ultra-precise doses of radiation to the treatment area. Since tumors move between and during treatments, you will need daily CT scans to maintain accuracy. Enhanced precision allows for higher doses of radiation, ultimately leading to higher cure rates. You will be monitored by a closed-circuit TV and intercom throughout your treatment. Treatment time can vary according to your plan, but generally lasts between five to 15 minutes.
Weekly Status Visits
You will visit with your radiation oncologist and nurse to review your progress, concerns and possible side effects. Should any problems arise before your weekly visit, please inform any staff member that you wish to speak with the physician and/or nurse. Your radiation oncologist will coordinate with the rest of your care team to monitor your progress throughout treatment.
