Movember: Focusing on Men’s Health at AtlantiCare

Movember is more than mustaches — it is a national movement to bring men’s health out of the shadows. Men are more likely to delay care, minimize symptoms and avoid medical conversations until a crisis. This month is a reminder to change that.

Prostate & Testicular Cancer — Early Conversations Save Lives

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men and is highly treatable when found early. Talk with your primary care provider or urologist about screening starting at age 50 or earlier if you have a family history.

Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men age 35 and younger. A painless lump, swelling or change in one testicle should never be ignored. A simple monthly self-check takes seconds and could catch issues early.

“Most of the men I see knew something felt off months before they came in. What causes trouble is not the condition itself but the delay. When men wait, care becomes more complex and recovery takes longer.” — Brian Steixer, MD

Contact one of our providers if:

  • You have a family history of prostate or testicular cancer
  • You experience changes in urination or sexual function
  • You feel a lump, swelling or ache in a testicle
  • You are overdue for a screening

Urology Issues Aren’t “Just Aging”

If you experience changes in sexual function or notice discomfort, don’t dismiss it as “just aging.” Early evaluation prevents complications and can significantly improve quality of life.

“Age is just a number. I have helped men in their 90s with erectile dysfunction. When ED is treated it does more than restore function — couples will hug me and tell me it saved their marriage.” — Laura Taylor, MD

Mental Health Is Men’s Health

Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your body. If you feel stress, depression or anxiety you don’t need to handle it alone. Talking to a behavioral health professional is the first step towards making a real difference in how you feel every day.

Ask for help if you notice:

  • Irritability, withdrawal or persistent worry
  • Sleep changes, loss of interest or hopelessness
  • Stress you are managing alone

Make Movember Count

  • Schedule an appointment with a primary care, urology or behavioral health provider
  • Do a self-check and remind a friend to do the same
  • Start one honest conversation with a man in your life
  • Grow the mustache and use it to start the dialogue
