Small Actions. Big Impact for Earth Day
Discover unexpected eco-friendly tips and help AtlantiCare clean up the beach
March 26, 2026
Earth Day, observed annually on April 22, is a reminder of our shared responsibility to protect and preserve the environment for future generations. It provides an opportunity to reflect on how everyday choices impact the health of our planet and to take meaningful steps toward more sustainable living. While large-scale change is important, small, consistent actions at the individual and community level can make a meaningful difference.
Did You Know? The following unexpected eco-friendly tips—recommended by AtlantiCare’s Earth ERG (Employee Resource Group)—offer simple, practical ways to reduce your environmental impact and support a cleaner, healthier community.
- Your digital clutter has a carbon footprint. Deleting old emails, unused files, and duplicate photos helps reduce energy demand from data centers.
- You can stop waste before it starts. Say no to items you don’t need, like plastic straws or promotional giveaways.
- Food scraps don’t have to go to waste. Composting keeps organic material out of landfills and reduces methane emissions.
- Repairing items is an eco win. Fixing clothing or household items instead of replacing them helps reduce landfill waste.
- Plant-forward eating uses fewer resources. Diets rich in fruits and vegetables generally require less water and energy than heavily processed or meat-based options.
- “Energy vampires” use power even when off. Unplugging chargers and electronics when not in use helps reduce unnecessary energy consumption.
- Buying local reduces “food miles.” Shopping at farmers’ markets helps cut down on transportation-related emissions.
- Short trips can make a big impact. Walking or biking distances under a mile helps reduce emissions and fuel use.
- Proper medication disposal protects water sources. Use community take-back programs instead of flushing unused medications. This is offered in the AtlantiCare Pharmacy located at 54 W Jimmie Leeds Road in Galloway.
In recognition of Earth Day, AtlantiCare’s Earth ERG is partnering with CleanOceanAction.org to host a Beach Sweeps clean-up on April 11 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the South Florida Avenue beach (2401 Boardwalk) in Atlantic City. This rain-or-shine event is open to the public and participants are encouraged to bring their own bucket and gloves. If interested, you can register here to join to help keep our shoreline clean and healthy.
