Spring Allergies

Spring is finally here! The days are longer, the flowers are blooming and the thought of being outside is actually appealing. But for many of us, the sneezing has already started. If spring allergies tend to knock you down, a few small habits now can make a big difference.

1. Start taking allergy meds now.
If seasonal allergies are a yearly visitor for you, starting your usual medication before symptoms peak can help keep them under control. Think of it as beating allergies to the punch! As always, follow medication instructions and check with your provider.

2. Don’t bring pollen inside with you.
Pollen is sneaky. On high-pollen days, keep windows closed at home and in your car when you can. Washing your hands and face, changing clothes after being outdoors and leaving your shoes at the door helps stop pollen from tagging along inside.

3. Rinse off before bedtime.
A quick shower at night can wash away pollen from your hair and skin, which may help reduce nighttime symptoms and improve sleep. Your sinuses will thank you.

4. Time your time outdoors.
Pollen levels are usually highest in the early morning and on windy days. If possible, plan walks, errands and outdoor breaks later in the day when pollen counts are often lower.

5. Hydration helps more than you think.
Drinking plenty of water helps thin mucus and ease congestion. It’s a simple step, but it really does help.

6. Keep indoor air as allergy-friendly as possible.
Changing air filters regularly and keeping indoor spaces clean can help reduce allergens like pollen and dust that make allergy symptoms worse.

6. Know when it’s time to ask for help.
If allergies are affecting your sleep, focus, or daily activities, talk with our AtlantiCare providers. There are plenty of options to help you feel better –you don’t have to tough it out on your own!

Spring is meant to put a little extra pep in your step and officially bid seasonal depression farewell, not greet you with constant sniffles. With a bit of preparation now, you can spend the season reaching for fewer tissues and feeling more like yourself. Book an appointment with a primary care physician today.
