The Great Outdoors are Better When You're Well-Prepared
Get Outside With These 5 Tips
May 12, 2026
Summer is just around the corner, and more people are heading outside. Whether it’s a hike, a beach day or a fishing trip, preparation makes all the difference. Before you head out, consider these five tips for staying safe, comfortable and energized.
Wear Clothes That Can Weather Any Forecast
Weather can be especially unpredictable this time of year: it could be cool and sunny in the morning, hot and humid by afternoon and stormy by sundown. Dressing in light, breathable layers can help you adjust to changing weather and temperatures. You should also consider sun protection when deciding what to wear. A wide-brim hat, sunglasses and lightweight long sleeves can go a long way in shielding your skin. And as tempting as those flip-flops may be, wearing supportive, well-fitting shoes on your summer excursion can lower your risk of slips or falls and keep your feet dry and clean if a storm does roll through.
Don’t Skimp on Sun Protection
Have you ever gone to the beach on a dreary, overcast day, only to come home with a surprise sunburn? Even on cloudy days, the sun can still damage your skin. In addition to dressing in protective clothing, be sure to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher any time you head outside. Remember to reapply every couple of hours if you’re going to be out for a while, and don’t miss those easily-overlooked spots including your ears, the back of your neck and the top of your feet and hands need protection, too. Last but not least: bring the right lip protection! Most lip balms soothe, but the one you bring on the go should have SPF coverage.
Bring Something to Sip and Snack On
Lose track of how much time you spent in the sun? Make a wrong turn on the trail? Is your walking partner’s pace more of a jog than a stroll? Even the simplest of plans can have unexpected obstacles and detours. Wherever your outdoor adventure takes you, you don’t want to be tired, hungry or thirsty when you get there. Bringing enough fluids with you is crucial – water is great, but consider something with electrolytes if it’s particularly hot outside or you’re doing something strenuous – and packing a few light snacks, like fruit, nuts or a granola bar can help keep your energy steady while you’re out and about.
Squash The Threat of Outdoor Irritants
If you’re out enjoying the weather, chances are pests like ticks and mosquitoes are, too. Consider grabbing insect repellent before venturing outside, especially if you anticipate spending time in grassy or wooded areas. When you get home, do a quick check for ticks: around your ankles, behind your knees, along your hairline and anywhere your skin folds. Another common issue that rears its head this time of year? Seasonal allergies. If you suffer from them, think about bringing meds along with you and/or taking them before you leave the house. Wearing sunglasses can also provide an additional barrier against pollen, and washing your hands or face after being outside can help reduce irritation.
Bring A “Just in Case” Kit
Last but not least: having a pre-packed bag of essentials on hand can provide peace of mind without weighing you down or holding you up. Consider including basic first aid items, like bandages, antiseptic wipes and important medications, along with miscellaneous necessities like hand sanitizer, tissues, and a cell phone charging bank.
