Spring Cleaning for Your Health
A simple checklist for a healthier season
March 26, 2026
Spring is when many of us open the windows, clear the clutter and reset our homes. It is also the perfect time to reset a few things that directly impact your health and safety.
A quick seasonal check can help reduce allergens and ensure you are prepared for everyday emergencies. As you tackle your usual cleaning routine, take a few extra minutes to review these five health-focused areas around your home.
1. Clean Out Your Medicine Cabinet
Medicines do not last forever. Over time they can lose effectiveness or even become unsafe.
During your spring clean-up:
- Check expiration dates on prescription and over-the-counter medications
- Safely discard expired or unused medications
- Store medications in a cool, dry place rather than humid bathrooms when possible
- Keep medications out of reach of children and pets
Important: Do not flush medications down the toilet unless the label specifically instructs you to do so. Many communities offer medication take-back programs or pharmacy disposal options.
2. Replace or Clean Air Filters
Spring brings pollen and other airborne irritants. A clean air filter helps keep indoor air healthier.
Check your heating and cooling system and:
- Replace HVAC filters if they look dirty
- Follow manufacturer guidance, usually every 1–3 months
- Consider higher-efficiency filters if someone in your home has allergies or asthma
Cleaner air can improve comfort and help your system run more efficiently.
3. Refresh Your First Aid Kit
A well-stocked first aid kit is essential for everyday injuries.
Take a moment to:
- Replace expired ointments or medications
- Restock bandages, gauze and adhesive tape
- Check that you have antiseptic wipes or solution
- Add items like gloves, tweezers and a digital thermometer
Keep one kit in your home and consider another for your car.
4. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors save lives, but only if they work properly.
During your spring check:
- Press the test button on each device
- Replace batteries if needed
- Ensure detectors are installed on every level of your home
- Replace units that are more than 7–10 years old
A quick test takes less than a minute and can make a life-saving difference.
5. Check Household Essentials
A seasonal check helps make sure everyday health essentials are ready when you need them.
Look around your home and:
- Replace old or leaking cleaning products
- Check flashlights and replace batteries
- Make sure you have soap and basic hygiene supplies stocked
- Safely store household chemicals away from children and pets
These small checks help keep your home both safe and healthy.
