feeling better with age

In a world filled with messages about looking younger, what does it really mean to “age well”? Does it require routine cosmetic procedures, adopting a complicated skincare routine and sleeping upright to avoid wrinkles? Does how you feel on the inside matter as long as you look youthful on the outside?

Whether you’re embracing every gray hair or you’re on a texting basis with your esthetician, “looking your best” means something different to everyone. But it doesn’t matter how much TLC you put into your appearance if you’re not giving your health that same level of care. In fact, staying healthy and active as you age is a great way to maintain a youthful energy.

You can’t prevent every health issue that pops up as you get older, but there are basic, daily steps you can take to stay in shape and feel as good as you look. Ready to rethink what it means to age well?

Start With Movement

One of the best ways to feel your best as you age is to keep moving. Regular physical activity helps support your heart, muscles, bones, balance and energy, while helping you maintain the strength and independence to keep doing the things you enjoy.

Movement doesn’t have to mean intense workouts, hours at the gym or overexerting yourself. Low-impact activities, like walking, gardening, swimming or dancing, are all valid options – and ones that come with a lower risk of injury. But the best activity is whatever you actually enjoy doing and are most likely to keep up with.

Keep Moving Freely and Flexibly

Being strong is important, but so is being able to move comfortably. Flexibility can help you maintain your range of motion and make everyday movement, like reaching into a cabinet or getting out of a chair, feel easier. Plus, staying limber can help reduce your risk of strains and other injuries.

You don’t need to be a yogi to maintain flexibility. Try adding a few gentle stretches to your morning routine or taking a few minutes to stretch after a walk. Just don’t push your limits.

if a stretch hurts more than it helps, talk with your healthcare provider about exercises that are right for you.

Make Preventive Care Part of Your Routine

Your retinoid might work hard, but it’s the less glamorous parts of taking care of yourself – routine appointments, recommended screenings, lab work and vaccinations – that can really help you maintain a youthful glow.

Preventive care helps you catch health issues before they have a chance to slow you down. And because your healthcare needs can change over time, regular conversations with your primary care provider can help make sure your care changes with you.

Give Your Brain Something to Do

Are you worried about the wrong wrinkles? Your brain deserves just as much TLC as your appearance. Reading, doing puzzles, learning a new skill, playing music, having conversations and staying socially connected are all good ways to keep your mind engaged.

You don’t have to completely reinvent your routine to stay sharp as you get older, either. Small changes like trying new recipes, taking a different route on your walk or spending time learning about a subject that interests you can give your brain something new to think about – and keep life interesting along the way.

Don’t Overlook the Basics

Some of the most meaningful things you can do for your health don’t involve fancy gadgets, complicated routines or miracle ingredients. In fact, they’re not very exciting at all: eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, managing stress and maintaining meaningful connections with family and friends all play important roles in your overall well-being and longevity.

And no, you don’t have to do all of it perfectly. The goal is consistency, not perfection. Small choices repeated over time can add up to meaningful support for your health and quality of life at every stage.

Aging Well Starts from Within

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to feel confident about your appearance as you age, but what good is all that effort to “look good for your age” if you’re not feeling good, too? A long, beautiful life is great. One where you feel physically and mentally strong enough to enjoy it is even better.

Ready to make healthy aging a priority? Talk with your primary care provider about the steps that are right for you.
