Dr Flannery performing robotic nipple sparring treatments

A breast cancer diagnosis can bring many questions, including which treatment option is right for you. As technology continues to advance, some patients now have access to new surgical approaches that may offer additional benefits while still providing effective cancer treatment.

AtlantiCare is the first healthcare system in the tri-state region to offer robotic nipple-sparing mastectomy using the da Vinci Single Port surgical system. Performed by Kay Yoon Flannery, DO, MPH, FACS, Chief of Women’s Oncology, this minimally invasive procedure expands treatment options for eligible patients with breast cancer and those at high risk for developing the disease.

What Is Robotic Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy?

Robotic nipple-sparing mastectomy removes breast tissue while preserving the nipple, areola and natural breast skin when medically appropriate. The procedure is performed through a single small incision using robotic technology that gives surgeons enhanced precision and visualization.

For eligible patients, potential benefits may include:

  • A smaller incision
  • Improved cosmetic outcomes following reconstruction
  • Better preservation of the nipple and surrounding tissue
  • A minimally invasive approach to surgery

Every patient’s diagnosis is different, and not everyone is a candidate for this procedure. Your care team will recommend the treatment plan that is safest and most appropriate for your individual needs.

Who May Benefit?

Robotic nipple-sparing mastectomy may be an option for people with early-stage breast cancer, ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), certain inherited genetic mutations such as BRCA1 or BRCA2, or those considering risk reducing mastectomy because of an increased risk of developing breast cancer.

Your surgeon will evaluate your diagnosis, medical history, breast anatomy and treatment goals to determine whether this approach is right for you.
