Minimally Invasive Surgery
Advanced Surgical Care with Your Recovery in Mind
At AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, our Women’s Health team provides advanced, patient-centered care for a wide range of gynecologic conditions. When surgery is recommended, our expert surgical team is dedicated to offering options that minimize recovery time, reduce post-operative pain and preserve surrounding healthy tissue.
Our goal is to provide effective surgical treatment while considering what matters most to you—including your health, lifestyle, reproductive goals and recovery.
Advanced Surgical Expertise
Our OB/GYN specialists use state-of-the-art technology – including advanced robotic and laparoscopic surgical techniques to treat a broad range of complex benign gynecologic conditions. These minimally invasive approaches allow surgeons to work through small incisions while using enhanced visualization and specialized instruments.
Our urogynecology specialists also perform vaginal hysterectomy, a minimally invasive approach in which the uterus is removed entirely through the vaginal orifice without abdominal incisions.
Your surgeon will discuss the approach that is most appropriate for your condition and individual needs.
Conditions We Treat
Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths that can cause heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, pelvic pressure, pain or other symptoms. When appropriate, our surgeons offer uterine-preserving procedures such as myomectomy, which removes fibroids while leaving the uterus intact.
Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus and can cause pelvic pain, painful periods, pain with sexual activity and other symptoms. Minimally invasive surgery may be used to identify and remove endometriosis lesions and address related pelvic conditions.
Abnormal uterine bleeding can include unusually heavy, prolonged, frequent or irregular menstrual bleeding. Depending on the underlying cause, treatment may include minimally invasive robotic or laparoscopic surgery, vaginal procedures or hysteroscopy, which allows physicians to diagnose and treat conditions inside the uterus without external incisions.
Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when weakened pelvic floor tissues allow pelvic organs to shift from their normal position. Our specialists offer advanced reconstructive procedures to restore pelvic support and address symptoms such as pelvic pressure, a vaginal bulge or difficulty with bladder or bowel function.
Ovarian cysts and other adnexal masses are common and may require monitoring or surgical evaluation. When surgery is recommended, minimally invasive techniques may allow our specialists to remove benign ovarian or other adnexal masses while preserving healthy tissue when appropriate. Surgical options are individualized based on your condition and reproductive goals.
Chronic pelvic pain can have many possible causes, including endometriosis, adhesions, ovarian conditions and other gynecologic disorders. Diagnostic laparoscopy allows surgeons to examine the pelvic organs through small incisions and, when appropriate, treat conditions identified during the procedure.
Our Minimally Invasive Surgical Capabilities
Robotic-assisted surgery uses advanced technology, including high-definition 3D visualization and specialized instruments, to help surgeons perform precise movements during complex gynecologic procedures. It may be used for procedures such as hysterectomy and certain pelvic reconstructive surgeries.
Laparoscopic surgery uses a small camera and specialized instruments inserted through small incisions in the abdomen. Depending on the procedure, surgeons may use multiple small incisions or a single-site approach. These techniques can minimize abdominal scarring and may support a shorter recovery compared with traditional open surgery.
Vaginal surgery uses a natural opening rather than abdominal incisions. Our urogynecology specialists perform procedures such as vaginal hysterectomy and other vaginal reconstructive surgeries. Because there are no abdominal incisions, these approaches do not leave visible abdominal scars and allow faster recovery times.
Hysteroscopy uses a thin, lighted camera inserted through the vagina and cervix to examine the inside of the uterus. It can be performed in the office or operating room and may be used to diagnose and treat conditions such as uterine polyps, certain fibroids and abnormal uterine bleeding—without abdominal incisions.
