AtlantiCare’s Joseph Lombardi, MD, MBA, FACS, Inducted Into the American Surgical Association
Globally Renowned Surgeon Honored by Country’s Most Prestigious Surgical Organization
June 16, 2026
AtlantiCare is proud to announce that Dr. Joseph Lombardi, Chief Physician Executive and Chair of the Heart and Vascular Institute, has been inducted as a Fellow of the American Surgical Association (ASA) — one of the most prestigious honors in academic surgery.
"Dr. Lombardi's induction into the American Surgical Association reflects the extraordinary impact he has had on the field of surgery, as well as his unwavering commitment to innovation, patient care and clinical excellence," said Michael Charlton, President and CEO of AtlantiCare. "This honor recognizes not only his remarkable career achievements, but also the leadership and vision he brings to AtlantiCare every day."
At AtlantiCare, Dr. Lombardi leads enterprise-wide clinical strategy, physician performance, and integrated care delivery across more than 110 sites, directing operations and strategic development for cardiovascular and vascular care. A board-certified vascular surgeon with more than 30 years of experience, he is internationally recognized for his contributions to aortic surgery and endovascular care, having helped shape modern treatment standards for aortic dissection and aneurysm repair.
Dr. Lombardi's dual role as an active operating surgeon and health system executive is itself a teaching model: it demonstrates to the next generation of physician leaders that clinical excellence and organizational leadership are not competing values, but complementary ones. His presence in both the boardroom and the operating room reinforces a culture in which trainees and emerging physicians see firsthand what accountable, values-driven leadership looks like.
Dr. Lombardi has also been honored as one of the top Vascular surgeons in the country by U.S. News & World Report, named to Newsweek’s ‘America’s Leading Doctors’ list in the specialty of vascular surgery, and Philadelphia Magazine's ‘2026 Top Doctors’ list, an honor he has earned consecutively for 15 years, reflecting enduring peer recognition as one of the region's most distinguished surgical specialists.
Founded in 1880, the ASA is the nation's oldest and most celebrated surgical organization. Its fellowship unites the most prominent surgeons and surgical scientists from leading academic medical institutions across the United States and around the world, with a mission to advance excellence in surgical science, education, and patient care.
Together, his induction into the ASA and his continued recognition among the countries top physicians affirm what those who work alongside Dr. Lombardi have long known: surgical mastery, educational commitment, and transformative leadership are not separate pursuits – they are the foundation of a career defined by service to patients, trainees, and the profession. AtlantiCare congratulates Dr. Lombardi on these well-deserved honors.
